Anxious and unable to sleep, Michael began abusing prescription drugs given to him because of reconstructive surgery work done on his scalp. He was constantly in touch with Debbie Rowe, a nurse who worked in the office of dermatologist, Arnold Klein. Tanya Boyd, a friend of Rowe, remembers: "Debbie loved Michael with all her heart, even though she had been married to someone else for a few years. She put him on a pedestal and thought he could do no wrong."

Jackson and Rowe had known each other for 12 years, and as his doctor's nurse she claimed to have seen what no other woman, other than his mother, had ever seen: Michael's naked body. This only served to deepen the bond they shared, at least as far as Debbie was concerned.

"Debbie felt that she was the only one Michael was confessing all of his sins to, whatever they were," says Boyd. "But now we know that he was also confiding in Lisa Marie."

In the late September 1993, Lisa Marie got a telephone call from Michael. His life was over, he told her. He wanted to commit suicide. She was his only friend. "Help me, please," he begged. The he hung up and apparently called Debbie Rowe. His life was over, he said. He wanted to commit suicide. She was his only friend. Help me please."Help me please." The he called Lisa Marie again. Michael, in a drug-induced moment, then slipped up, according to a well placed source in the Jackson camp. He was on the phone with Lisa, but he thought he was talking to Debbie. "I need you," he said. "Marry me."

Lisa was astonished. Maybe just to calm him down, she responded by saying "Of course, I'll marry you!" "Thank you, Debbie," Michael said. "Debbie? Who's Debbie?" Lisa asked. Befuddled, Michael quickly hung up. "How embarasing," recalls the extremely reliable source. "He asked Lisa Marie to marry him, thinking she was Debbie. And Lisa accepted. Michael was in such a fog, I guess he didn't know what he was doing."

Shortly after their marriage, Lisa Marie learned that Michael suffers from a form of lupus. "She absolutely freaked out," says and associate. "She called Michael in Chicago to ask him about it." He told Lisa that a nurse from Dr. Klein's office would call and explain it to her. The next day, Lisa received a call from Debbie Rowe.

"Lisa wasn't sure what to make of Debbie," says a source. "She just seemed to be to familiar with Michael's case." And when Debbie told Lisa that she had known Michael for over 10 years, Lisa became even more suspicious.

"It's true that she wanted to know more about Debbie Rowe, a lot more," says Tanya Boyd. "So she asked Debbie a few questions about her relationship with Michael and then didn't know what to make of what she told."

Apparently Debbie told Lisa that she was Michael's biggest supporter and would "do anything for him." According to sources, after Lisa hung up, she had an uncomfortable feeling. "It didn't feel right that this woman was talking so passionately about Michael, the man Lisa was married to," says a close friend of Lisa Marie. "Five minutes later, Lisa called Debbie back and demanded to know if Debbie was in love with her husband." "I am in love with Michael," she told her. "I love him with all my heart and soul. He means the world to me." Debbie then reportedly broke down in tears.

"But I'll never have him, because his heart belongs to you," she continued. "And how can I ever compete with you? Look who your father was."

Tanya Boyd says: "From what I understand, Lisa wasn't exactly thrilled to hear all of his. She probably thought Debbie was cheeky to admit it so openly."

Was Lisa Marie jealous? Did she have a reason to be? "I can't say that Lisa was exactly jealous," says another friend of Lisa. "She really never felt that Michael was a passionate person, and mostly, I think, she felt that Debbie was wasting her time if she was in love with him. Still, for the sake of her ego and pride, I understand, she told Debbie, "Look, nursey, I'm sorry that your'e in love with my husband. But you're right. He's mine. So get lost,'" Then Lisa Marie hung up.

"Afterwards, she burst out laughing," says Lisa's friend. "Lisa said, 'Can you imagine? Me acting like the jealous little wife because Michael's wet nurse---or whatever she is---is in love with him? What is this craziness?'"

Jackson had wanted Lisa Marie to have his child and had told her so many times. Lisa Marie considered it----despite what many people liked to believe, the couple did engage in sex activity--but by the spring of 1995 she had made up her mind that she didn't want to bring a child into this particular union.

That's when Michael sadly told a colleague that "it's really over" between them. "Lisa doesn't want to give me a child and if she doesn't know that this is the most important thing to me, then she really doesn't know me the way I thought she did," he complained.

According to those in his camp, Michael began moving on with his life, making future plans, and one of those plans involved Debbie Rowe.

Even though Rowe never had the kind of close relationship with him that he had with Lisa---his associates says he's never had a single, meaningful conversation with her about anything, and he has never even tried to convince people he is in love with her because it's just too far-fetched, even for him-----she was willing to do the one thing Lisa was not willing to do: have his baby.

In December (1995), Debbie was pregnant. Lisa Marie didn't know a thing about it. "It's good she didn't know because she would have killed Michael Jackson," says a friend of hers. "She wouldn't have believed it anyway. It was something she would have had a hard time accepting because, deep down, she still felt that Michael loved her in his own way."

Indeed, when Michael head that one of Lisa Marie's closest friends had stumbled upon the news that Debbie was expecting and threatened to tell Lisa Marie---"because this is something she should know; after all she is your wife"---Michael became quite the frantic expectant father.

"He absolutely did not want her to know," says Edward Cain, a former Jackson employee. "He liked Lisa much the way a fourth grader is smitten with another fourth grader. Like the naive kid he is at heart, he didn't understand the adult emotions he was toying with. But he did know that Lisa Marie would be hurt, and one thing he hated was to see her cry. The thought of it broke his heart.

And insider says: "Lisa was always like a mother to him anyway---scolding him over his lifestyle---and at one point Michael said, "Oh my God! Lisa is gonna be so made at me if she finds out I got a girl pregnant! What am I gonna do?' He started freaking out in New York while he was rehearsing at the Beacon Theater and trying to monitor all of this high drama by telephone," adds the source. "Poor Michael became so agitated he actually had a panic attack--it was as if he was having a heart attack."

Michael was hospitalize at New York's Beth Israel North Medical Center after collapsing during a rehearsal. Even though Lisa did not know. Michael's secret, she had already decided that their relationship was over. So she was extremely reluctant to join him, as his aides asked her to, for the sake of publicity.

But in the end, Lisa realized that she should be with Michael Jackson. So off to New York she went. Perhaps she should have stayed home. "He confessed all to Lisa right there in the hospital room: that Debbie Rowe, was pregnant with his child," says a source.

"Michael thought he was close to death and he wanted to come clean. So this was a deathbed confession of sorts. he was sobbing. He begged her to forgive him and said he would name the kid after her if it was a girl."

Lisa wasn't in a forgiving mood, adds the source. In fact, she was very upset. "She remember who Debbie was but she was blindsided by this amazing revelation." says one of her friends. "Her heart was broken to pieces, not because
she was in love with Michael but because this was all so unfair." Lisa Marie couldn't wait to get back to L.A. and be alone so she could have a good cry.

Two months later, Debbie Rowe had a miscarriage. "Michael was devastated," says a source close o the singer. "He wanted to try again with Debbie as soon as possible. He phoned Lisa to tell her but he never got through."

When Debbie became pregnant again, and when he Michael married her on November 15, 1996, Lisa Marie had no comment. But, say Lisa's intimates, Michael phoned her from Australia in the middle of the night to tell her about the marriage. A pal of Lisa Marie says: "Michael was sobbing, 'Forgive me, Lisa. I've married Debbie. Now I can't live with myself. I hurt you so badly. How could I have done that to you? You've always been there for me.'"

"I wish you luck," Lisa Marie reportedly told her former husband. "I really do. But you, my friend are no longer my problem. Now you're hers." Then she hung up. "Michael feels guilty," adds the friend. "He wants absolution, but Lisa's not giving it."

Last December, Lisa Marie received another surprise call, from Michael's new wife.

According to the sources, Debbie cried to Lisa that Michael was going to be abroad during the holidays and not with her in Los Angeles. She was seen months pregnant. She was lonely. And she wondered what she had gotten herself into.

"Please," Debbie reportedly pleaded with Lisa Marie. "what was your marriage to Michael like? I have to know what I'm in for. Can you help me out---one woman to another?"

"Lisa couldn't believe her ears," says a source close to her. "She didn't know want to be rude. In fact, she felt sorry for Debbie because Debbie sounded a lot like she, herself, had sounded in recent years: sort of desperate. But enough was enough." Lisa reportedly told her: "Nursey, there's nothing I can tell you about your husband that you won't learn on your own, if you haven't already. "I paid my dues with that guy. Now I'm over it and I'm over him. I wish you luck." Then she politely hung up.
