Michael Jackson's close South African friends have revealed that the king of pop loved the country so much that he planned to retire here and wanted to help pen the music for the 2010 World Cup song.
speaking from his home in New York yesterday, Gerry Inzerello, Sol Kerzner's right-hand man, spoke of the "great sadness" felt by himself and his wife Prudence Solomon, the former Miss South Africa and SABC presenter.
Jackson was the best man at their Cape Town wedding.
According to media reports at the time, Inzerello said: "Ask Michael which is his favourite country, he'll undoubtedly say South Africa. This place inspires him."
Inzerello, who was in Cape Town for the opening of the One & Only hotel earlier this year, confirmed this in the telephonic interview. "South Africa was his second home. He had a special relationship with it. He loved South Africa and he loved Madiba.
"Three months ago he told me when he was semi-retired and his third son, Prince Michael Jr, was a little older he planned on relocating to South Africa."
He particularly loved the North West Province.
The tycoon said they had "an extraordinary friendship".
"I met him when I was 18 and he was 14. We've been there for each other's weddings and when our kids were born."
